Corporate Wimbledon High School 1880- The 22nd school of the Girls' Public Day School Company, Wimbledon High School, opened on 9th November 1880 at 74 Wimbledon Hill with 12 girls under headmistress Edith Hastings. The school was founded at the request of Mary Gurney. It soon out grew its first home and moved to a new purpose built premises on 7 May 1887 on Mansel Road. In 1902 the preparatory department moved into the old home of the school at 74 Wimbledon Hill. By 1910 the school offered a domestic science course for girls over 17 which continued until World War Two. From 1911-1921 the school was known Wimbledon Hill School. In 1917 the Mansel Road building was badly damaged in a fire and had to be rebuilt. In the meantime the senior school moved to 5 Grosvenor Hill and the Juniors to 14 Ridgeway Place. In 1919 the Junior school moved to 70 and 72 Wimbledon Hill. In 1920 the senior school returned to Mansel Road. In 1959 the freehold of the Mansel Road and Wimbledon Hill corner was purchased and a new junior hall was built. In 1970 the school brought 82 Wimbledon Hill (Avon House) to give the school extra room. A new junior school was opened in 1975.
