She was educated at Manchester High School for Girls and Manchester University. After graduating in 1910 she held a fellowship in zoology at Manchester followed by another fellowship at University College, Reading from 1913-1915. She earned her doctorate from Manchester in 1917. 1915-1919 she was the acting head of the Zoology Department at Bedford College and Senior lecturer in Zoology at Birkbeck College from 1920. She then joined the Biology Department at King's College of Household and Social Science (later Queen Elizabeth College). From 1925 to her retirement in 1951 she was the head of the Department. In 1933 she was part of the Advisory Committee on Education for the Colonies and served on the Makere Commission on Higher Education in East Africa in 1936. In 1937 she carried out an enquiry into conditions on St Helena for the Colonial Office. She was an life fellow of the Linnean Society of London and its Vice-President, 1932-1933. She died on 17 December 1989. 

She was member of the Girls' Public Day School Trust Council 1929-1954, and served on the sites and buildings committee. </Nationality>
