Person Dame Kitty Anderson

1903-1979 Kitty Anderson was born on 4 July 1903. She was educated at Saltburn High School and Royal Holloway College, London. In 1925 she trained as a teacher at the London Day Training College. In 1926 she took a post at Craven Street secondary school in Hull. From 1930-1933 she studied for her doctorate at Royal Holloway. In 1933 she was appointed to a teaching post at Burlington School, London. In 1939 she became headmistress of King's Norton Grammar School, Birmingham. From 1944-1965 she was the head of the North London Collegiate School. She was a member of the Carr-Saunders committee on education for commerce, 1946-1949; president of the Association of Headmistresses, 1954-1956; member of the National Advisory Council for the Training and Supply of Teachers, 1953- 1961; member of the University Grants Committee, 1959-1961; member of the committee on higher education, 1961-1963. In 1966 she became a member of the Public Schools Commission. She was appointed DBE in 1961. She died 15 January 1979. Anderson was a member of the Council of the Girl's Public Day School Trust, 1965-1975, Chair of the Council, 1965-1975 and Vice-President, 1975-1979. She was also a member of the Education, Sites and Buildings, Finance, Development Committees, and the Inspections Sub-Committee, Chairman's Working Party, and the Governing bodies of the Centralised Schools. She was also a representative for Newcastle High School.
