1815-1881 Arthur Penrhyn Stanley was born in Alderley Edge, Cheshire on 13 December 1815. He was educated at Rugby School and Balliol College, Oxford. In 1839 he became a fellow of University College, Oxford, and took holy orders. From 1840-1850 he was a tutor in his College and was appointed select preacher in 1845. In 1850 he was appointed secretary to the Royal Commission on university reform. In 1856 he was appointed regius professor of ecclesiastical history at Oxford. In 1863 he was appointed to the Deanery of Westminster and in the same year married Lady Augusta Bruce. He died on 18 July 1881 GB/366/598 P. C.
