He was educated at Eton College and Christ Church, Oxford and was elected a fellow of All Souls College. He became MP for Stamford, Lincolnshire in 1853.  In 1866 he was the Secretary of State for India.  In inherited the Marquessate of Salisbury on the death of his farther in 1868 and became a member of the House of Lords. In 1874 he once again became the Secretary for India, and became the Foreign Secretary in 1878. In 1881 he became the leader of the Conservative members of the House of Lords. He was Prime Minister from 1885-1902. In 1889 he set up the London County Council. He died on 22 August 1903. </Nationality>
