1821-1902 Frederick Temple was born on 30 November 1821 on Santa Maura. He was educated by his mother before he entered Blundell's School, Tiverton in 1834. In 1839 he entered Balliol College, Oxford. In 1842 he was appointed lecturer in mathematics and logic. He was ordained deacon in 1846, and in 1847 priest. From 1848-1849 he worked for the committee of council on education. From 1849-1855, he was the principal of the Kneller Hall training College for workhouse school masters. In 1855 he became inspector of training colleges for men. He was Head master of Rugby School, 1857-1864, before he was a member of the Taunton royal commission on endowed schools. In 1869 he became the bishop of Exeter. After the 1870 Education Act he improved and added to the Exeter church schools; proposed a system of exhibitions to allow support poor children from elementary education to university; and established two secondary girls' schools. From 1885-1896 he was the Bishop of London where he was a prime mover in the 1890 Education Bill and acted on royal commissions relating to education and the poor. In 1896 he became the Archbishop of Canterbury. Even though his health was failing, he continued to actively promote issues regarding education and the plight of the poor.
