He became a fellow of Trinity College in 2832, assistant tutor in 1834, and tutor from 1839-1845. He initial intended to go into law but due to ill health was ordained as deacon in 1833 and priest in 1835. In 1845 he took up the Trinity College living of Ware, Hertfordshire. From 1850 to 1863 he was classical examiner in the University of London. In 1860 he became the regius professor of history at Cambridge. In 1872 he became the Dean of Lincoln.
