1808-1892 Henry Edward Manning was born in Totteridge, Hertfordshire on 15 July 1808. At the age of 14 he was sent to Harrow School and entered Balliol College, Oxford in 1827. After the bankruptcy of his father in 1831, he obtained a junior clerkship in the Colonial Office. In 1832 he abandoned his political aspirations to go into the church,returning to Oxford as a fellow of Morton College. In 1833 became curate to John Sargent, the evangelical rector of Lavington and Graffham in Sussex, little realizing what the consequences would be. Manning went to Lavington in January 1833 and married his daughter in the same year, who died in 1837. In 1838 he took part in the Church Education Movement. In 1841 he became the Archdeacon of Chichester. In 1851 he converted to Catholicism and was ordained as a priest. In 1865 he became the Archbishop of Westminster. In 1875 he was made a cardinal. He died on 14 January 1892.
