Person James Anthony Froude (1818-1894)

1818-1894 James Anthony Froude was born in at Dartington, Devon on 23 April 1818. He was educated at Westminster School before going on to Oriel College, Oxford. He grew up around members of the Anglo-Catholic Oxford Movement, and intended to become a clergyman. While at Oxford he became dissatisfied with the Movement and increasingly turned to the unorthodox religious views. He was ordained a deacon in 1845. His religious doubts appeared in his writings, such as the semibiographically 1849 novel The Nemesis of Faith, which drove him to abandon his religious career. He pursued a literary career, writing reviews and historical works which often cause controversy. From 1861-1874, Froude was the editor of Fraser's Magazine.
