In 1847 he assumed the title of marquess of Lorne, after the succession of his father to the Dukedom of Argyll. He was educated at Eton College, St Andrews University, and Trinity College, Cambridge. In 1866 he visited Jamaica and spent a term at the University of Berlin before travelling to Italy. He represented Argyll in the House of Commons from 1868-1878. On 21 Mar 1871 he married Princess Louise Caroline Alberta, the fourth daughter of Queen Victoria. In 1878 he was appointed governor-general of Canada, where he was responsible for the creation of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts and the Royal Society of Canada. He resigned the post in 1883 and immersed himself in the management of his estates and writing. In 1895 he was elected to the House of Commons as a Liberal Unionist for Manchester South. He became the 9th duke of Argyll on the death of his father in 1900. After 1910 his health declined and was struck with pneumonia in 1914. He died on 2 May 1914. </Nationality>
