He qualified in 1918 and later became a senior partner of the firm.  In 1932 he married Hilda Mary Napier.  He became a director of the National Building Society in 1938 after serving as a directors' auditor. He remained on the Board when the Society merged with the Abbey Road Building Society to become the Abbey National Building Society and was the chairman of the Finance Committee in 1949. He later became the Chair of the Board of Directors in 1963. He was also involved in several other businesses including the Neuchatel Asphalte Company and Lambton Close Holdings. He was also a member of the Godstone Rural Council, 1916-1919; member of Essex County Council, 1925-1928; served on the Royal Commission on Civil Service, 1929-1931 and 1953-1955. He was knighted in 1958. He was also the vice-chairman and trustee of the Industrial Christian Fellowship and a Licensed Lay Reader in the Diocese of Oxford. He died in May 1964.

He was a member of the Council of the Girl's School Trust, 1944-1964; Deputy Chair of the Council, 1946-1948, and Chairman of the Council, 1948-1964. He was also instrumental in the reconstruction of the Trust in 1950 and served on the Education and Sites and Buildings Committees. He was the founder of the Friends of the GPDST and their chairman from 1952. His wife was also an active member of the Trust.</Nationality>
