In 1956 he became the Director of the National Foundation for Education Research (NFER), and served as chairman on their International Project foe Evaluation of Educational Attainment, 1958-1962 and the UK National Child Development Study. From 1968-1973 he was the Dean of the University of London, Institute of Education, before becoming the Chair of Educational Psychology at the Institute and the Head of the Department of Child Development and Educational Psychology until 1978. From 1978-1982 he was a Scientific Advisor to the Bernard Van Leer Foundation. He was also a members of the English New Education Fellowship and a member of the Guiding Committee of the World Education Fellowship up to 1965
