He graduated with a BSc in Chemistry from Glasgow University in 1933, after which he trained as a teacher at Jordanhill Training College, Glasgow, before returning to the University to study education. He graduated in 1937 and taught at various schools in Glasgow. From 1939 he lectured at Jordanhill and Glasgow University. In 1941 he was attached to the Ministry of Food and later the army where he worked on improving officer selection. He was later appointed senior psychologist and awarded the honorary rank of lieutenant-colonel. In 1947 he was one of the founders of the Tavistock Institute of Human Relations, and chaired its management committee, 1947-1949.  Morris was also a student at the Institute of Psychoanalysis during the same period. In 1950 he was appointed the Director of the National Foundation for Education Research. In 1956 he became the chair of the University of Bristol's Institute of Education. He worked on raising the status of school teachers and teacher training colleges, and he served on the University Council for the Education of Teachers (UCET). He retired in 1975 and died on 8 June 1990. 
He was a member of the Guiding Committee of the World Education Fellowship from the 1950s.</Nationality>
