He was educated at King Edward VI School, East Retford until he left to join World War I.  He entered Magdalene College, Cambridge, in 1919. After graduating in 1922 he completed a one-year teacher training course at Cambridge.  He taught at Portsmouth Grammar School, 1923-1925, before becoming the head master of Scarborough High School. He moved to London in 1932 to take become headmaster of Wandsworth Grammar School, where he remained until his retirement in 1963. 

During World War II he became actively involved in debates on post-war educational reconstruction.  In 1942 he published 'A Democratic Reconstruction of Education' with three other London head teachers which led to the formation of the Conference for the Democratic Reconstruction of Education. King was also the Chair (later Secretary) of the English New Education Fellowship and member of the Guiding Committee of the New Education Fellowship from Nov 1952.

He also oversaw the transformation of the Grammar School into Wansworth comprehensive School in 1956, one of London County Council's five showpiece comprehensives which had formerly been grammar schools. In 1958 he joined the editorial board of 'The Forum' and became the chair of the editorial board on his retirement in 1964. 

He was also active in international education and represented Rotary International at a UNESCO conference in 1945. He was also an advisor to the United Kingdom National Commission and chaired its textbook sub-committee, 1947-1961. He died on 21 Mar 1983. </Nationality>
