1913-1991 Born in London in 1913. Educated at Jesus College, Cambridge, and completed his teacher training at the Institute of Education, University of London. He taught at the progressive Burgess Hill School. He was a conscientious objector and was allowed to continue to teach during World War Two. After working in France and England he became a warden of a residential clinic for delinquent children. He was also active in the nuclear disarmement movement. In 1968 he obtained his doctorate and was appointed lecturer in education and art theraphy at Goldsmiths' College School of Art. He was active in the World Education Fellowship, first as a member of the English New Education Fellowship and as a member of the Guiding Committee of the Fellowship. He was also one of the Editors of the New Era from 1972-1982. He retired in 1980 and was appointed a trustee of the Gandhi Foundation. He also became a visiting Fellow of the Institute of Education and played a key role in the foundation of a chair of peace studies at the university. He chair the board of Houseman's, a pacifist book shop, and worked for the Peace Pledge Union.
