1882-1964 She was born on 15 February 1882 in Berlin, Germany. She was educated at "höhere Mädchenschule Luisenschule", 1888-1898; Victorialyzeum Berlin, 1904-1906; and Kaiserin Augusta-Gymnasium Charlottenburg. She graduated from Berlin, Montpellier, and Marburg. At Margburg she met Hermann Lietz and Gustav Wyneken who were influential in her later work and she completed her PhD in 1913 on Goethe's "Urphänomen" and the Platonic ideal. She taught German Literature at Cambridge University before returing to work in the Auskunft-und Hilfstelle für Deutsche im Ausland und Ausländer in Germany in 1914. In the same year she helped found the "Bund Neues Vaterland" (German League for Human Rights) and in 1915 worked towards the foundation of the International Women's League for Peace and Freedom. In 1921 she held found the New Education Fellowship with Beatrice Ensor and Adolphe Ferrière. Rotten became the Bureaux-Director for the German-speaking countries for the Fellowship and edited it's german lanaguage journal 'Das Werdende Zeitalter' with Karl Wilker. In 1929 the Fellowship was reorganised and Rotten became the Vice-President. In 1930 Rotten founded co-founded a school at Hellerau just outside Dresden.
