1886-1960 Born in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. Graduated with degree in Civil Engineering from Dartmouth College in 1908. Worked as civil engineer before teaching the subject at Milliken University in Decatur, Illinois, where he became interested in how student learnt. Gained a PhD in Education from University of Illinois in 1915. Taught at University of Chicago until 1920 when he moved to the Teachers College at Columbia University to be the Professor of Education, where he remained until he retired 1951.He was interested in progressive education and was active in Progressive Education Association and the New Education Fellowship. In 1928 he cowrote his first major work, The Child-Centered School, which described the basis for "child-centered" education. and also promoted social reconstructism. He also edited the yearbooks of the National Society for the Study of Education and help found National Council for the Social Studies. From 1922 he produced the successful series of 'Social Science Pamphlets' designed for junior high school students which were published as textbooks by Ginn and Company from 1929. His textbooks were later censored by the National Association of Manufacturers and the American Legion who accused Rugg as being anti-American and anticapitalism and were no longer published in the 1940s.
