Corporate Clapham and Streatham Training College 1898-1949 The college originates from a department to train teachers at Clapham High School, one of many attached to Girls' Day School Trust (GDST) schools, and a domestic science department for girls over the age of 15. In 1898 the school opened a Froebel Department to train kindergarten and elementary school teachers, which was later recognised by the Board of Education and the National Froebel Union. The domestic science department also developed into a training department and was followed by departments for art and post graduate teachers. When Clapham High School merged with Streatham Hill High School in 1938, the Froebel and postgraduate Departments moved to 28 Palace Road as the Clapham and Streatham Hill Training College. In 1939 they were evacuated to Brighton and from there to Guildford, where the Postgraduate Department was also discontinued. After World War Two the College purchased 24 Palace Road and in 1946 the college became a separate body from the school. The College was taken over by the London County Council in August 1949, and was renamed the Philippa Fawcett Training College. From this date the governing body was a Sub-Committee of the London County Council.
