1884-1966 Born Cornelis (Kees) Boeke on 25 September 1884 in the Netherlands. While studying at the Delft University of Technology he spent a year in England and became a Quaker. He studied at the Woodbrooke Quarker Study Centre near Birmingham and married Beatrice Cadbury. From 1912-1914, the Boekes were missionaries in Syria. During World War I, they became active in peace work. After speaking out against the war he was expelled from England and returned to the Netherlands. After the war he built a conference centre he called 'Brotherhood House' where the first international peace conference took place in 1919. In the 1920s he withdrew from the international peace movements and began to take a interest in education. He believed children should be allowed in sociocracy in schools and the aim of education was to teach children a sense of democracy. In 1926 he opened the 'De werkplaats' school in Bilthoven, which implemented the Montessori Methods and allowed the students to be partly responsible for their own curriculum. He headed the school until 1954.
