1904-1987 Theodore Brameld, influenced by John Dewey's education al philosophy, promoted personal and cultural transformation through education. After completing his PhD at University of Chicago in 1931, he taught at Long Island University before moving to New York University and Boston University. He continued to promote progressive education despite opposition from McCarthyism. He retired from Boston in 1969 and taught at Springfield College in Massachusetts and the University of Hawaii. He died in October 1987. He was an active member of the American Education Association (later USA Section of the World Education Fellowship) and was the section's representative on the international council of the Fellowship from 1946.
