| Description | The testimonials come from a wide range of Jewish congregations, communities and organisations across Britain, Europe, the USA and elsewhere, and were presented to Sir Moses and Lady Judith throughout their active philanthropic lives, particularly after the trips to Damascus in 1840, Russia in 1846 and Morocco in 1864. There are a large number of tributes paid in 1883 and 1884 on the occasion of Sir Moses' ninety-ninth and one-hundredth birthdays. There is a mixture of manuscript and printed tributes, many of which are highly decorated and illuminated. The majority are in English, German or Hebrew, though there are some in Russian, Swedish, Italian and Hungarian. They are mostly in the form of addresses, though some are in the form of poems or diplomas of honorary membership to the organisation in question. There are also some appeals. |
