Description | Manuscript notebook. Written from both ends of the book. One side inscribed "Book belonging to my darling grandmother B A F Herbert", probably Bridget Augusta Herbert nee Byng, who married Hon. Charles Herbert RN in 1806. Their only child, Augusta Elizabeth Herbert, married Francis Vincent, 10th Baronet, of Stoke D'Abernon, in 1824. They had one child, Blanche. A separate inscription on the same page is dated August 1811. This half of the book contains extracts from books, poetry, letters, quotations, etc, primarily relating to philosophy, morality, grief and wisdom. The other side of the volume begins with a copied extract from "James' Naval History" April 1799, describing a naval battle involving the frigate ' Amelia' captained by Charles Herbert. Pasted in to the front cover is a piece of writing titled "Blanche's birthday", written by one of her parents. The rest of this half consists primarily of reviews for the novels "Aubrey Court" and "On the Brink" by Franics Vincent (writing as Frank Lyfield) and a letter to him dated 1872 regarding "The Fitful Fever of a Life". A note by William St Clair inside the cover mentions the likely relationships between the author(s) and people named in the book. |
