TitleCommonplace Book, "Garland"
Date1825
DescriptionCommonplace book of Emma Garland, written for her by her father. Dedication on the second free endpaper reads "March 1825. To Emma Garland, from her father; as an affectionate token of respect for her talents and esteem of her character. A Collection of Pieces, made at various periods, chiefly from modern writers of acknowledged excellence, but whose works are diffuse and expensive; with some originals, of which those contributed by the Donor are feeble efforts to follow such exemplars. [From p.245 the Extracts not having been examined with the original transcripts are incorrect]".
Contains poetry and extracts of prose on various subjects. Annotations by William St Clair on the front free endpaper identify Burns, Erasmus Darwin, Thomas Holcroft, Charlotte Smith, Wordsworth, Byron, Scott and Southey and remarks "Mainly 18th C taste".
In a single hand, or possibly two very similar. Appears to have been compiled in two sections (p.1-244 and 245-420) and bound / re-bound later. The text block has been cropped very close to the text, indicating that one or both sections were cut down to size.
Ink stamp of the Libraria de San Jose no.127, Lima, on the dedication page. The binding bears the stamp of Isaac Wilson, Stationer, Hull. Emma Garland was likely a member of the Garland family of Hull merchants who had business interests in Peru and Chile.
