Description | Commonplace album of poetry and extracts. In several hands with one predominant. Common themes are love, marriage, remembrance and faith. Watermarked 1826, but includes "Seeking the Blessed Land" by Dora Greenwell, published in her "Songs of Salvation" in 1874 and several poems published during the 1840s and 1850s. Annotation by William St Clair on the front free endpaper mentions an "(excellent) poem to Byron" about his relationship with his half-sister ("an erring sister's shame"). This note seems to relate to the second entry in the volume, "Byron", which is actually an extract from his "The Giaour", rather than an original work addressed to Byron. Includes works by Campbell, Amelia Opie, Moore, and others. Many of the entries are initialled, presumably by the person who copied them. No other marks of ownership. |
