| Description | Diary of events leading up to World War II. The majority of the diary, covering the period 2nd July 1939 to 24th August 1939 and 29th August 1939 to 2nd September, is divided into columns for: 'foreign and general', 'social', 'part politics' 'miscellaneous' and 'remarks'. The information records a note of the day's events, and the source from which Orwell got the information. At the end of the diary (for 28th August and 3rd September 1939) Orwell has summarised the events from the previous days, having been unable to record information in as much detail as he had been travelling. The final entry records the main events from the day war was declared on Germany by Britain and France.
