| Description | An earlier register, in the unbound section of Minutes, H/A/2/9, covers applications from 1729/30 to 1733. In H/D/1/1 there are only sixteen entries for the period 1736-1739, but from April 1740 they appear to be fairly complete. The information given, though varying greatly, normally includes age, state of health, and names of persons by whom recommended; sometimes address and place or district of birth; occasionally other particulars such as occupation and parentage or name of late husband. Entries have been crossed out as applicants were removed through admission to the Hospital, withdrawal, or death. Dates of admission are added in the margin, with occasional other notes. From 1782 to 1796 a note is added of any pension or grant enjoyed by the applicant. From 1836, when entries in English begin, there are separate lists of men and women, and occupations are regularly stated. From 1842 the applicants are divided into classes A, B and C according to the degree of urgency. As in the registers of inmates (H/D/5) more genealogical information is given after 1850. Index to applicants from 1842 (pp. 170-171). |
