| Description | These rough registers of admissions and deaths or departures were kept in small note-books by successive Stewards from 1727 to 1828, followed by a single volume running to 1952. There are gaps from May 1736 to November 1738 (perhaps a missing book), and August 1757 to October 1758 (a missing section in H/D/6/7). The last book is unfinished, the practice of keeping this record having evidently been abandoned. From the beginning to 1736 entries are noted as 'portés', i.e. entered up in the formal register H/D/5/1; and from 1740 to 1762 the folio numbers of entrants in H/D/5/1 are noted, evidently by the book-keeper, who had been appointed in that year. The first booklet (H/D/6/1) also gives the age or approximate age of inmates who died between 1727 and 1729 only. From 1772 the room number is sometimes, later usually noted. |
