TitleCommonplace Book, "Bagster"
Date1827-1845
DescriptionCommonplace book belonging to Eunice Bagster. The first entry is addressed to "My Eunice" and ends with "A Parent's love is first and best" signed Samuel Bagster, 25 May 1827. There is a note inside the volume by William St Clair which seems to attribute the book to Eunice Bagster nee Birch, wife of Samuel Bagster the elder, founder of the publishing company Bagster & Sons. Given the opening dedicatation, it is more likely that the book belonged to their daughter, also named Eunice, b.1804.
Contains various poems, pensées, mottoes, quotations, etc., usually signed and dated by the friend or family member who contributed them. Although the book opens with thoughts on "Love and Friendship", most of the entries touch on Christianity and faith. Several pencil and ink drawings throughout the volume and one black and white photograph of a book on a lace cushion.
